their house at Barangay Sto. Domngo, to spouses Ex-Mayor Dalmacio A. Aurellano
and Priscilla Tamunday.
When the Japanese War broke out I
1941, Herminio, then residing at Julian Pesito and Petra Ortiz’s house in Barangay
San Jose, Camaligan, was only in Grade III at the Camaligan Central
School . His father,
Julian, who was then a Filipino guerilla, evacuated together with his family to
Pamukid, San Fernando .
While at Pamukid, he was caught by the Japanese soldiers and was brought to
Pasacao for interrogation. While being interrogated, the Japanese learned that
he was a teacher by profession. General Katagi made him to attend a seminar on
Japanese to learn Sensi, the Japanese
grammar, and was sent back to Pamukid, San
Fernando to teach at Pamukid Elementary School .
Here, he taught until 1947, when he transferred to Libmanan to teach at the Libmanan Parochial School until 1951 at the
invitation of a certain Fr. Halum. Herminio completed his high school education
and graduated at the Bicol Central Academy of Libmanan. Then, he went to Manila to pursue his
college degree at the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU).
Herminio came back to Camaligan in
1957 and resided at Maria Llagas Pesito’s house at barangay Sto. Domingo. It
was here that he met his present spouse, Adelaida, who was also residing
Teodora Prado’s house just in front of their house. They married in 13 June 1958 . The newly wed
rented a space at the Dr. Severino Olaño’s property in Sabang, Naga City .
When his wife, Adelaida, gave birth to their firstborn son, Marlo, in 1959,
they went back to Camaligan to rent the second floor of Emilio and Rufina
Adversario’s house at Barangay Sto. Domingo. In 1964, Herminio bought Casilda
Prado’s property at Barangay San Marcos, which was supposedly the share of inheritance
of Macaria and Arturo Prado but the latter declined to accept his share. Herminio
used this property to put up his kuwadra
for two horses and kalesa, until later when he thought to construct there
permanently his own house. It is now here where he and his family presently
reside.
As for employment, Herminio first
sought employment with the Rural Bank of Nueva Caceres in 1958. In 1968 we was
employed by the GenBank, first at its Manila
office, but when it opened its Naga Branch, he was transferred to GenBrank,
Naga Brach. Here, he became the branch manager until 1974, when he transferred
to Continental Bank. When Continental Bank closed, he was rehired by GenBank
until his retirement in 1979.
Herminio also recalls the old
municipal building at its original site when it was constructed in 1902 by the
first municipal mayor of Camaligan, Pedro Bustamante. It was constructed at the
same time when the Camaligan Elementary School was also constructed at the
Abilay property, where the present municipal building annex is now
located. He said that this old municipal
building had galvanized iron for walls at the ground floor, but its posts and
second floors were made of durable wood, such as hamorawon and narra. This old
building was located at the present site of the Municipal Health
Center .
At the back of the old municipal
building were found the houses of COP Hospicio de la Cruz and Jaime Naldoza, a
former Municipal Councilor and notary public.
Herminio reports that Arturo Prado
operated a small rice mill during prewar days on the property of Sabino Prado,
located beside the present house of spouses Rosario and Pedro Galicia. When the
rice mill was demolished after liberation, the spouses Delfin and Genoveva
Villanueva constructed a house there. Delfin and Genoveva Villanueva were the
parents of Lourdes
who married Reynaldo Jacinto of barangay
San Marcos. When the Villanuevas vacated this place in the 1960’s, the property
was used by Pedro Galicia as a kuwadra
for his horses and kalesa.
Another rice mill was constructed at
the riverbank of barangay Sto. Domingo, which was owned and operated by
Catalino Abilay, who had his two storey house beside it. However, when Catalino
transferred his ricemill at Sabang. Naga
City , Emilio Adversario
put up his own rice mill on his property by the riverbank. This ricemill was
operated by Gregorio San Juan.
The main municipal building,
constructed on the concrete stage of the municipal plaza, was contracted to the
William Yee Concepcion (WYC) Construction during the incumbency of Mayor
Dalmacio A. Aurellano (1972-86), when Herminio Pesito was serving as sectoral
representative in the municipal council. Construction of the dilapidated
municipal building at the Abilay property was subsequently undertaken during
the incumbency of Mayor Manuel Prado.
The old catholic cemetery at
Barangay Sto. Domingo was proposed in 1972 by then Ministry of Human Settlement
Officer of the Marcos Administration, Henry Aguirre, to be demolished and
transferred to the Public
Cemetery at Barangay
Marupit. However, the proposed public playground to be constructed at the site
of the former catholic cemetery as proposed then by the Human Settlement
Officer, Henry Aguirre, did not materialize since the swapping of this property
to the public cemetery at Marupit with the Roman Catholic cemetery property at
the poblacion did not as well materialize until now. Instead, a barangay chapel
was constructed upon the approval of the Roman Catholic Church which until owns
the property up to now.
According to Herminio Pesito, many
residents were engaged in buy and sell business at the Naga market, such as the
Tamunday family, who owned a nipa goods store, and the Aurellano family, who
also owned a dry goods store.
Horse-drive carriages (kalesas)
were laos
operated by some residents of Sto. Domingo, such as Pedro Galicia, Herminio
Pesito, Arturo Pardo, and Florentino Rectin.
Florentino Rectin owned a
blacksmithing shop at barangay Sto Domingo, at the same time that he operated a
kalesa business. Florentino Rectin was married to Maria Conde, who had the
