PROFILE OF BARANGAY SAN FRANCISCO, CAMALIGAN, CAM. SUR
By: Dominador N.
Marcaida, Jr.
SB-Camaligan, Camarines
Su, Philippines 44401
A. History:
In
January 1956, my parents, the spouses Dominador Marcaida Sr. and Estelita
Nicolas, were able to buy a parcel of agricultural land (swampy) situated at
San Francisco, Camaligan, from Felix Francisco. This lot (Section 1, Lot 36, now declared under the name of Salvacion
Marcaida, married to Ricardo Antonio) was bounded on the North by the property
of Pablo Antonio, on the East by Doroteo Alimorong, on the South by Candida
Aligado and on the West by Marcelo Abilay. According to our first informant,
Felix Francisco was the only son of Dionisia Francisco, the daughter of Mariano
Francisco and Juana Ragas (1871-1986).
Our first informants
are the spouses Domingo Ragas and Clara Antonio, of San Roque, Camaligan,
Camarines Sur.
Domingo
Ragas was the former municipal secretary during the first term of Ex-Mayor
Agapito Loriaga from 1956 up to 1959. He
succeeded Consejo Pondare as the municipal secretary. He was also succeeded
after his stint by Amparo Medrano. In
1956, they already held office at the Municipal Building Annex that was
constructed in 1954 at the property donated by the family of Catalino Abilay. He
also served as cashier of the Bureau of Soils of the Department of Agriculture
Regional Office V from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. Domingo Ragas, 81
years old (born 29 April
1929 of Tarosanan, Camaligan) was the son of Antonio Alden and
Gregoria Ragas who was the daughter of the Simon Ragas and Raymunda de la
Concepcion.
Clara Antonio
Ragas, 80 years old (born 17 April 1929 at San Francisco, Camaligan), was a
public elementary school teacher assigned at Tarosanan Elementary School for
more than twenty years from 1968 up to 1985, and then at San Roque Elementary
School from 1985 until she retired in 1990. She is the daughter of the spouses
Narciso Antonio and Felicita Francisco. The couple Narciso and Felicita, with
their whole family, moved to Libmanan and had their house built there at the
back of the Monterola
Building (at the Libmanan
market site). She attended elementary schooling until Grade V in Libmanan. They
came back to Barrio San Francisco, Camaligan, in 1941 during the Japanese time
when she was just 11 years old. Narciso however was able to buy the lot at Camaligan
poblacion on the property of Silveria Ortiz (sister of Petra Ortiz, married to
Julian Pesito) and transferred their residence there in 1950. It was here that
Domingo Ragas and Clara Ragas were married in March 22, 1956 . After their marriage, they
rented the house of Jaime Naldoza at the back of the original municipal
building that was built at the site of the present Municipal Health
Center .
The spouses

Clara
Ragas informed us that the early residents of the barangay during her residence
at barrio San Francisco ,
Camaligan, were the families of the following: Pedro Alinood, Pedro Alemania,
Severino Alinood, Aurelio Alemania, Doroteo Alimorong and Mauricio Lumbria.
During
the Japanese time, Pedro Alinood and Pdor Alemania conducted Aurora procession around the barrio by
carrying the image of the barrio patron saint, San Francisco , on their shoulders to avert
the epidemic that was ravaging the place. The original site of the barrio
hermita was the property beside Natalio Lumbria’s lot situated by the riverbank
(Section 2. Lot 7). The present site of the
barangay hermita was a donation by the spouses Anastacio Alemania and Beata
Lumbria. It was in 1950s that the residents constructed the barangay hermita
that was made of wooden posts and walls and nipa roofing at the present site.
It was, however, during the term of Barangay Captain Celso Ramos (1972-84),
with Visitacion L. San Vicente as Pastoral President, that a concrete structure
with corrugated iron for roofing was built .
At the back of
Clara Ragas’ house on the property of Narciso Antonio along the riverbank,
there grew galiang plants (a root
crop of the gabi family) in
abundance, so much so that when the Japanese soldiers ordered the people of
Camaligan to assemble at the parish church in 1943, the family of Narciso
Antonio hid among the tall leaves of the galiang
plants.
Male
residents of the barrio used nets to catch kabebe at the Bicol River
for their food, while female residents occupied themselves by selling golocena
(assorted vegetable crops) at the Naga market. Many residents also raised various
livestock in their backyard to augment family income, while continued to farm
their rice fields for subsistence.
Houses
of many residents consisted of nipa roofs, with wooden panels for walls and
flooring, which was raised above the ground to allow a space for raising fowls,
such as chicken and ducks.
The
native of barrio San Francisco, who were the original settlers of the place,
called their place by the name of “Basud”, which means “a place where the riverbank is growing” because of soil accretion
due to erosion of the riverbank in other places.
