PROFILE OF BARANGAY STO. TOMAS
By: Dominador N.
Marcaida, Jr.
SB-Camaligan,
Camarines Sur, Philippines 4401
All our
informants, born about 1920 to 1940, agree that Barangay Sto. Tomas existed as
a barangay of Camaligan at the time they were born.
Our first
informant, Pura Molina Agpay, widow of Aproniano Agpay, told us that since
their marriage in 1938, both she and her husband resided in Naga City
where their first daughter Dolores was born. In 1942, at the onset of the
Japanese occupation, they left Naga
City and evaciuated to
Gogon, Dugcal, Camaligan, at the house of the spouse Francisco Agpay and
Leoncia Abesa until the end of World War II. From 1946, during peacetime period
when the Americans finally liberated the Philippines from Japanese invaders,
they rented the property of Cornelio Abesa and Nena Capucao at Barangay Sto.
Tomas as tenants until 1952. This property of the Abesas at Sto. Tomas was the adjoining
property of Sinforoso Hernandez on the east side, which eventually became part
of his property through sale in 1970. In the late 50’s, the couple Aproniano
and Pura Agpay was able to buy their own
residential lot from Santiago Hermosa, where they now reside. Aproniano Agpay provided well for
the needs of his family by being an ambulant fish vendor in Camaligan.
Our second
informant is Amando Hernandez, the son of Sinforoso Hernandez. He corroborated
the story of Pura Agpay regarding the adjoining property of the Abesas occupied
by our first informant in 1950, which his father eventually bought in 1970. In
addition to this information, our second informant told us that the property
where their ancestral house was located was also bought by his father from a
certain Marcelo Valenciano and Catalina Rebuquiao, both natives of Barangay San
Lucas, prior to his birth there in April 14, 1941.
Sinforoso
Hernandez’s father was Anselmo Hernandez, a native of San Francisco , Camaligan. Anselmo married
Patricia de la Cruz. Anselmo had a sister named Vicenta Hernandez who married
Hilarion Medrano. Her sister Vicenta and her husband Hilarion resided at
Barangay San Marcos, at the property presently owned by the Sagarbarrias. This
property of the spouses Hilarion Medrano and Vicenta Hernandez at Barangay San
Marcos was bought by them from the spouses Severino Enguerro and Ceferina
Abragan (the parents of Rufina Enguerro
Baroso) after the latter’s wife died. This property became the present property
of the Sagarbarrias when Jose Medrano, son of Hilarion and Vicenta, sold this
share of his inheritance to the Sagarbarrias.
Sinforoso
Hernandez was married Apolonia Montero, a native of Iquin, Canaman. Apolonia’s
mother, Jacoba Ragas Francisco, however, was a native of San Francisco,
Camaligan. Jacoba had a sister also who still resided at Barangay San
Francisco, Camaligan by the name of Bonifacia Ragas Francisco, who was the wife
of Pastor Alden.
Our second
informant told us that during the Japanese time, all the members of the
Hernandez family at Barangay Sto. Tomas, Camaligan, evacuated for two years to
Iquin, Canaman, on the property of Apolonia Montero, Sinforoso’s wife, to
escape the Japanese atrocities. They went back to Barangay Sto. Tomas when
peacetime arrived.
Our
second informant provided us a partial list of residents of Barangay Sto. Tomas
who took the helm of barangay leadership since after Second World War up to the
present, to wit: Engracio Cordial, Sinforoso Hernandez (1947), Victor De Dios, Marcelo
Corpus, Rosalio Valles, Marcos Almen (1970-75), Andres Servidad (1976-79),
Marcos Almen (1980-86), Efren Reyes (OIC), Jose Agravante (1994-2002), Regino
F. Regidor (2002-2007), and Jasmin Medrano Trinidad (2007 up to present).
Amando Hernandez
also provided us a list of barangay residents who became prominent in the town
of Camaligan :
Former Municipal Mayors Elias Agna de Dios (1932-35), Andres Diez (1945),
Dalmacio Aurellano (1964-67, 1972-86); Municipal Councilors Jesus Hipolito
(1972-74) and Antonio A. Flores (1972-95), and public school teachers Rosalio Alipante
and Adela Duran, and Remedios Aguirre. A lone barangay artist by the name of Feliciano
“Gabat” Oliva, married to Florencia de los Santos , resided for ten years on the property
of Ernesto Arellano. The oldest citizen presently living in this barangay is
Margarito Agrado, who is now 93 years old.
Our third
informant, Concepcion Valles (married to Roberto Ables), confirmed the story of
Amando Hernandez regarding the donation of the barangay chapel site made by her
ancestors. She said that her grandparents, Ponciano Valles and Julia Alcantara,
were the original donors of the chapel site which occurred in the early 1900’s.
It was her father, Rosalio Valles, however, who did the formal signing of the
deed of donation to the parish of Camaligan in 1970. Rosalio Valles became a Delegado del Barrio after Marcelo Corpus’ term.
Concepcion Valles
Ables, was born to the spouses Rosalio Valles and Julia Agomaa in 1942 at Sitio
Napao, Cagbibi, Pamplona, in her parents’ rice farm. Her family was on
evacuation there during the Japanese time. While they were on evacuation at Napao,
Cagbibi, Pamplona, their house adjoining the barrio hermita at Sto. Tomas,
Camaligan, was used as a fuel depo by the Japanese soldiers who were garrisoned
at the house of Bartolome Alipante and Ruperta Abad just in front of their
house and the hermita. This fuel depot was set afire by Filipino guerillas
operating in the area at that time that also burned down the hermita and Rosalio Valles’ house. What
was left of the hermita were the hamorawon posts, which, according to
another informant, Maximo Corpus, the residents restored to their original
location after the war. Groups of residents contributed new corrugated iron to
roof the rebuilt barangay chapel, according to Maximo Corpus. Despite the
repair, the chapel remained similar to its pre-war condition, consisting of
posts, a roof and a wooden cross in the middle of the altar. The image of the
Barangay Patron Saint, St. Thomas the Apostle,
was a donation of Eugenia Jacob, which she kept at her house for safekeeping.
It was only brought out and displayed at the hermita during the May Santa Cruzan and during the yearly barangay
fiesta. Intensive renovation of the barangay chapel was undertaken during the
terms of Jose Agravante and Andres Servidad.
Concepcion
Valles Ables attended doctrina cristiana schooling at Maestrang Titay
Aguilar in Barangay Marupit sometime in
1951. She was in Grade 3 when typhoon Trix hit Bicol in 1954. She was also the
classmate of my half-sister, Salvacion, during their elementary years at the
Camaligan Central School.
According
to this informant, Gaudencia Aurellano was the wife of Juancito Aurellano, the
father of Lourdes Aurellano who married Bienvenido Medrano, and were the
parents of the incumbent Punong Barangay of Sto. Tomas, Jasmin Medrano Trinidad .
Bartolome
Alipante, Ruperta Abad’s husband, was a USAFE soldier. But much later after he
died, Alberta
became the wife of Former Municipal Mayor Agapito Loriaga, who had a daughter
by the name of Francia Loriaga, whom Ruperta adopted as her own child. Their house at Barangay Sto. Tomas was
considered the most elegant house in Camaligan during the years that it
existed. The property of Bartolome Alipante and Ruperta Abad later became the
property of Francia Loriaga (now married to Juan de los Reyes).
Nemesia
Cordial was married to Flerentino Reyes of Barrio San Pablo, and were the
parents of Fidel, Filomeno, Natividad, Lourdes and Teresita Reyes. The parents
of Nemesia and Elpidio Cordial were Egil
and Atay.
At
the back of Sinforoso’s property at the corner of the municipal and barangay
roads, were the property of Pedro and Simplicio Alipar.
Catalino San
Buenaventura, married to Isabelita Cobillas (sister of Marilyn Cobillas Navera
and Danilo Cobillas), was the brother of
Cresenciana San Buenaventura.
Maximo
Aliniante was married to the Teofila Ables.
Felisa
Cordial, daughter of Constancio Cordial and
Mining Aguillon, married Sergio San Lorenzo (son of Jesus San Lorenzo
and Illuminada Mariscal of Barrio San Lucas). Sergio had a brother by the name
of Romeo San Lorenzo and sisters by the names of Zenaida and Teresita. When his
wife, Illuminada Mariscal, died, Jesus San Lorenzo remarried with Gorgonia, who
had children by the names of Hermita, Norma and Jesus Jr.
Alberta
Aguillon was the wife of Jose “Boy” Diez, son of former Municipal Mayor Andres
Diez, whose house stood on his property beside the barangay creek (this property is now owned by Marilyn
Nepomuceno).
Reynaldo
Iñigo married Estrella Claveria, the daughter of Paz Cordial Claveria. Paz was
the sister of Felisa Cordial, the wife of Sergio San Lorenzo.
Ernesto
Arellano was married to Corazon Hipolito, the parents of Barngay Councilor
Emmanuel Javier H. Arellano.
The
Aguirre property was originally owned by Luciana Alimuin Aurellano, married first
to Victoriano Valles, and later after his death to Estanislao Trinidad of
Barangay Marupit. Luciana was the sister of Cipriano Alimuin Aurellano, married
to Dalmacia, and was the father of former Municipal Mayors Dalmacio and
Francisco Aurellano, and Carmen Aurellano Iraola. Luciana and Cipriano’s mother
was Marcelina Alimuin.
Our
fourth informant, former Punong Barangay Jose Agravante, the son of the spouses
Jeremias Agravante of Duang Niog, Libmanan, and Rosa Cambaling, narrated that
he stayed in this barangay since 1952. He was from San Juan , Camaligan. He was married to Buena
Aurellano, the sister of Lourdes Aurellano, whose parents were Juancito and
Gaudencia Aurellano. At first, they resided on the property at the back of the
barangay hermita. In 1968, they
transferred to the Aurellano property.
The Galias compound was previously the property of Julia Agravante and Miguel
Dometita.
Barangay
Officials during PB Jose Agravante’s term, who first constructed the southern
portion of the Barangay Hall in 1991 through funds solicited from Cong. Raul S.
Roco and through the efforts of Municipal Mayor Manuel N. Prado, were the
following: Barangay Councilors – Ramon M. Almen, Domingo A. Galias, Pedro O.
Cordial, Benito M. Hernandez, Antonio San Buenaventura, and Jose M. Jacob Jr.;
Barangay Secretary – Ruperto A. Generoso Jr.; Barnagay Treasurer – Ma. Rowena
C. Corpus.
Our
fifth informant, Juanita Sta. Clara Macaro (born in 1944), is the sister of
Rosa Sta. Clara (born in 1948) who is the declared owner of the Sta. Clara
property. Rosa was married to Mauro Badiola of
Baao, Camarines Sur. The spouses now reside at Pacita Complex, San Pedro,
Laguna. Juanita and Rosa’s brothers and sisters include the following: Andres
(died 1925), Mariano (+), Pedro (+), Natividad Sta. Clara Austero (now resides
in Albay), Clara Sta. Clara Dometita (lives just in front of her house on the
other side of the road), Isabel Sta. Clara Eduardo (wife of Bernardo Eduardo, a
former Rural Bank of Camaligan employee).
The property of Enriquesto and Josefa Bautista were once part of their
property, but was sold to the Bautistas by her brother Mariano, which property
became a part of the share of his inheritance. Juanita further informed us
that, during the Japanese time, their family evacuated at Barangay Sua,
Camaligan.
Our
sixth informant, Isabel Acuatin (married to Marcos Almen), born in 1926, was
the daughter of Leoncio Acuatin and
Fidela San Juan. Her brothers and sisters were the following: Salvador (the
eldest and served as a Philippine Army soldier during the World War 2. Bartolome
Alipante was Salvador’s wedding sponsor in 1942 when he was married to his
first wife, Expectacion. When his child, afterwards his wife, died, he went to Manila and remarried
there.), Salome and Sancho. Her parents first resided in barrio San Jose at the property
of Miguel and Culing Adversario, which was later sold to Macario Agomaa where
his house now stands. Then, they transferred to the Alimasa property (now
Carmen Buenaflor San Juan’s property at San
Pablo ) when her mother became the guardian of the
child Cristino because his parents were always away from home most of the time.
She started to reside in Barangay Sto. Tomas before her marriage to Marcos
Almen in 1947. They then resided at the property of the spouses Mariano Almen
and Telesfora Rebuquiao, the parents of Marcos Almen. Marcos’ other brothers
and sisters were the following: Alfredo, Magdalena ,
Telesfora Almen Baylon, Arsenio, Salvacion Almen Angeles, and Jose. Marcos Almen
sold the share of his inheritance in the Marinao Almen property to Rufina
Adversario, who sold it in turn to former Punong Barangay Regino F. Regidor.
After PB Regfidor took possession of the property, Marcos and Isabel Almen
transferred to their new property in Zone 1 where their present house now
stands. They bought his new property from Epifanio Terbio at the cost of
P35,000 in 2002. But the original owner of this property before Epifanio Terbio
was Elpidio Mauricio, son of the spouses Serafin and Justina Mauricio.
The
property next to theirs on the north side was previously owned by a certain
Juan who was the janitor of Camaligan
Central School .
This is now part of Ramon and Juliana Antonio’s property.
Barangay
officials during PB Regino F. Regidor’s term, who improved the barangay hall in
2002-2007 through the barangay 20% EDF, were the following: Barangay Councilors
– Emmanuel A. Galias, Manuel Javier H. Arellano, Emmanuel R. Abias, Dulcenea A.
Tolosa, Jose A. Silerio, and Armando A. Almen; SK Chairman – Janice DB. Pagao;
Barangay Secretary – Emiline Anacin; and Barangay Treasurer – Francia A.
Rabina.
Our
seventh and last informant, Maximo Corpus, Sr., was born in March 24, 1926 at Barangay Sto. Tomas
to the spouses Genaro Corpus and Cesaria Trinidad of Barangay Marupit,
Camaligan. His mother Cesaria was the daughter of Mauricia Abias who was
married to a certain man surnamed Trinidad from Marupit, Camaligan who begot
Cesaria (married to Genaro Corpus of Sto. Tomas, Camaligan) and Vicente
Trinidad [married to Catalina de los Santos and begot Rufina (married to Lisie Lee), Flaviano (married to Constancia Adante), Francisco
(married to Biviana Agagad),
Natividad (married to Roberto Enguero)
and Caridad (married to Nilo Bala)].
This
informant remembers Mauricia to be very
old at the age of 80 years old when he was just then a child. Mauricia Abias was sister to Benita Abias,
the wife of Mariano Apring.
This
informant’s other brothers and sisters were the following: Veronica (born in
1922), and Marcelo (born in 1924).
This informant married
Filomena Cordero of Poblacion Pamplona, Camarines Sur, in 1947. Their offspring
were the following: Asuncion ,
Mario, Danilo, Fernando, Maximo Jr., Remigio, Rowena, Wilma and Eduardo.
Maximo remembers
the first moments of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines , particularly when it
reached Bicol. It was sometime in November 1942 while he was gathering his
palay harvest on their farm at Patong, Pamplona when he saw over his head the
first flights of the Japanese war planes over the Bicol sky. He also learned
that a Japanese bomb was dropped on the rice fields adjoining the Marupit
public cemetery but did not explode. This bomb was later recovered by residents
living in the area. When the Japanese came to occupy Naga City ,
a certain Lt. Felix Espiritu (married to Josefina Sta. Ana of Camaligan), a
Filipino guerilla officer, ordered him
to evacuate the five sisters of the Daughters of Charity at the Colegio de Sta.
Isabel to Sitio Napao, Cagbibi, Pamplona. Here, the five sisters stayed for two
years, until the end of the war, at the house provided by the guerillas.
Other evacuees
form Camaligan who stayed with this informant at Sitio Napao were the
following: the families of Former Mayors of Camaligan Teotimo Rebuquiao of San
Marcos (his wife Eugenia Rebuquiao) and the children of Elias Agna de Dios
(Jose, Victor and Vicente de Dios), the families of Vito Agna of San Juan,
Concepcion Valles, Felix de los Santos (Tito de los Santos’ father) of Sto.
Tomas, and the brothers Flaviano and Leon Cambaling of San Juan . While on evacuation, the
informant’s house in Sto. Tomas provided additional quarters for Japanese
soldiers. Their house was situated just next to Bartolome and Alberta
Alipante’s house being occupied by Japanese military officers. Later they
learned that the floor boards of their house were carted away and used by the
Japanese for some other purposes.
When the hermita was burned down in 1945, he
helped in its rebuilding by putting back the hamorawon posts on their original locations. They used salvaged
lumber to construct new rafters and beams for roofing. Groups of residents
contributed pieces of corrugated iron to be used as roofs. He confirmed the
story of Concepcion Valles Ables that the barangay patron saint’s image was
kept at the house of Eugenia Jacob’s (Gabriel Jacob’s mother) house. Maximo
attended doctrina cristiana at Maestrang Minay’s house, who resided at the
Abesa property that had been vacated by the spouses Aproniano Agpay and Pura
Molina in 1952. His classmates there were Ramon Reyes, Luis Diez, Visitacion
Apring, among others.
The source of
livelihood for most residents of barangay Sto. Tomas during his days were the
following: vending various goods and perishable commodities at the Naga market,
rice farming (farmers from Sto. Tomas, Camaligan at sitio Napao, Cagbibi,
Pamplona, were Rosalio Valles, Mariano Almen, Eulogio Ables, Marcelo Corpus
(tenant of Andres Diez, but his farm was later sold to Agapito Loriaga but
finally sold it to Marcelo), Maximo Corpus (tenant of Pedro Agomaa and Silvina
Adayo, the parents of Macario and Fermin Agomaa of San Jose, Camaligan), Felix
de los Santos, Catalino Alipante, and Sinforoso Hernandez (who owned rice farms
at San Francisco and Tarosanan, Camaligan), and fishing (Residents constructed bamboo fish cages (tambongs) along the banks of the Bicol River to catch fresh water
fishes. Our informant said that boatloads of fishes were caught in ricefields
during those days.)
Maximo Corpus
Sr. told us that, in Sitio Napao, there were more farmers from Camaligan than
from Pamplona
itself. The reason he said was that during those days, if one was industrious
enough to clear wide areas out of the forested landscape as far as his finger
could point, he could claim and register them as his own. Hence, many
Camaligueños, from Barangay Sto. Tomas in particular, were able to claim wide
areas because they were then very industrious.
The informant,
Aurora Añez Mora, supplied to us the information regarding the ancestry of her
grandparents, Leonila Jacob and Florencio Francisco. According to her,
Leonila Jacob was a native of Camaligan, while Florencio Francisco was a native
of Pamplona, Camarines Sur. They married and begot the children Godofredo
(single), Guillerma [married to Aquilles Añez who begot Aurora
(married to Anastacio Mora) Manuel (married to Carmen Aguinaldo), and Lourdes
(married to Pacifico Bautista)], and Asuncion [married to Gonzalo Chaneco, married first to Epifania Lim who had a children
with her by the names of Lilia (married
to Eulogio), Marlene (married to Lazaro Rosales) and Grace (married to Jeffrey
Gapola); then remarried to Asuncion Jacob and Gonzalo Chaneco begot Rosario
(married to Inocencio Ipo), Nael (single) and Hononito (married to Meyan) ].
When Leonila
Jacob’s first husband died, she remarried to Andres Diez who was a native of Zumarraga, Samar. Andres Diez was
first married at Zumarraga to a certain woman who begot him two children by the
name of Paz (single) and Felina (single). According to this informant, Andres Diez
could have arrived in Camaligan from Samar in the early 1920s accompanied by
the two kids of his first marriage. Then he remarried to Leonila Jacob, the
widow of Florencio Francisco, and they begot Jose “Boy” Diez (married to Alberta Aguillon), Milagros
(married to Miguel Pardiñas) and Luis
(married to Salvacion Reyes).
Another
informant, Maximo Corpus, told us about the Jacob’s family ancestry in
Camaligan. Bartolome Jacob of Camaligan married a woman from Gainza, Camarines
Sur who bore the surname of a certain Gregorio. Bartolome Jacob and this woman
begot Rufina (single), Felino (married to Alejandra), Leonila (first married to
Florencio Francisco and then, later, to Andres Diez), and Maximo Sr. [first
married to Eugenia, and then to Asuncion Ocampo who begot him Eustaquio (single), Nida (married to Oscar Candia), Emma (married
to Rey), Angelita (married to Melchor
Antonio), Maximo Jr. ( a catholic
priest), Ernesto (married to Clara
Bola),and Salvacion (married to
Eustaquio Dispe)].
According to
Maximo Corpus, there was another Jacob by the name of Gabriel Jacob who was
married to Francisca. These were the parents of Julia, Eugenia
[married to Facundo San Lorenzo and begot
the children Remedios (married to Vicente Luz), Jose (married to Primitiva
Collantes), Vicente (married to Mercedes Nacional), and Nicanor (married to
Rosita)], and Rufino (married to Andang).
Crispina Alpodo, the wife of Telesporo
Corpus, and the parents of Genaro Corpus, had a sister by the name of Victoria who was married to a certain
Agomaa and another sister by the name of Dominga,
the wife of Casimiro Agusa of Tarosanan, Camaligan, who begot a certain child
by the name of Mariano Agusa (1881-1926).
The Agomaa
Family ancestry includes the following: Pedro
(married to Silvina Adayo and were the
parents of Macario and Fermin Agomaa of San Jose, Camaligan); Potenciano (married to Florencia Ansay) was the son of Victoria Alpodo of Sto.
Tomas, Camaligan; Florencio (married
to Simplicia Dacian Marcaida of Mangayawan, Canaman, Camarines Sur) was the son
of Simplicio Agomaa and Petra Iñigo of San Lucas, Camaligan; and Ernesto (the father of Julia Agomaa) of
Barrio San Juan, Camaligan, who was the brother of Florencio Agomaa.
The Abias Clan
of Barangay Sto. Tomas originated from the spouses Roman Abias and Consolacion Mañago of San Mateo, Camaligan
(sister of Ramon Mañago who was married to Paz). This couple begot Francisca
(married to Arsenio Ocampo who begot the
children Blesilda, Danilo, Emily, Mila, Angelita, Arsenio Jr., and Carmelita),
Salvacion
[married to Roger Cariño who begot Roger Leo, Salvacion Lora, Salvacion Lina,
Salvacion Liza, Roger Antio, Roger Melchor, Salvacion Lourdes), Consuelo
(married to Elias Enguero who begot
Teresa (married to Celso Sevilla), Antonio (married to Pilar Bolivar), Belen

Virginia (married to Rena Iñigo), Vilma (married to Allan Conde), Violeta
(single), Nory (married to Ronald Cenco), Vina (single), and Rogelio Jr.
(single)] and second marriage with Isidro
Buenaflor who begot Ely (married to
Gelly Lo), Rebecca (married to Hector),
Jose (married to Meling), and Buena],
and Antonia
[married to Felix San Buenaventura who
begot Edwin (married to Joy Iraola), Eva (married to Leopoldo Macalintal), Ariel
(married to Vilma Lantin) and Annie (married to Ruel Gardoce)].
There was also
another Salvacion Abias of Barrio Sto. Tomas who was married to a certain
Marcelo Flores who was the father of Antonio (married to Consuelo), Roque, and
Magdalena (married to Felix Aliñar). Salvacion Abias’ sister by the name of
Fausta Abias was married to Juan Flores of San Lucas, Caamligan who was Marcelo
Flores’ brother. Salvacion and Fausta Abias’ brother was Roman Abias (married
to Consolacion Mañago and begot the children as listed above).
A certain Julian Flores of Marupit Camaligan first
married a certain woman who was surnamed Asico, the sister of Alejandro Asico
of Gogon, Dugcal. This couple begot Basilia Flores (married to Pablo Antonio of
San Francisco, Camaligan who begot Mariano, Narciso, Francisco, Fausto and
Pablo Jr.), Calixto Flores and Teodora Flores (married to Pedro Alemania). Then
Julian Flores remarried for the second time and he married Tomasa Ragas [(daughter of Agapito Ragas and Canuta Capoles) and begot Simeon Flores
(married to Rosa Lumbria)].
Ex-Mayor Pedro
Flores (1924-1927), a widower who had children whose names were Domingo and Maxima (married to
Marcelo Medrano of San Roque, Camaligan) remarried Bernarda Alacdan of
Tarosanan, Camaligan.
